Mr. Smith, a linotypist and news reporter, arrives in Danzburg one evening in search of employment. Unfortunately, the Danzburg Courier is about to go bankrupt after the bigger and richer Danzburg Gazette moves into town and wipes them out. Smith offers to temporarily waive salary and give them a loan of $5,000. This all sounds good, until Smith is proven guilty of causing catastrophes in order to generate scoops for the paper before the Gazette can get to them!
